Keynote Speaker: Dr. Cornel WestPurpose:   Through this collaborative event, Speaker Blowout is aimed towards providing a space for the student body at large to be educated and informed around issues that directly affect access to this university and institutions of higher learning. This annual event is geared towards addressing and bringing to light such disparities that impact the success of under resourced and underrepr…esented communities on campus. This directly correlates to the lack of support and retention services that are available at UCSC. Dr. Cornel West is a prominent and high profile scholar in academia. He received his B.A. from Harvard and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Princeton University. Dr. West is currently a professor of African American Studies at Princeton University. He is known for his work around race, gender, and class in American society. His work has contributed to the success and fruition of ethnic studies and student empowerment at campuses and universities across the nation.  We are certain that his visit will hold a great deal of weight and provide leverage for students, not just in regards to ethnic studies, at the decision making table—as decision are winding down throughout the month of May.
